July 2006: Arizona DUI Arrests Down Forty Percent From Last Year

177 drivers were arrested over the Fourth of July weekend for driving under the influence of alcohol.  Although the number declined from last year’s 544 arrests, it still makes for 55 percent of the arrests statewide.  More than 320 drivers were arrested between June 30 and July 4.

101 officers from seven police agencies participated in the weekend taskforce.  They made arrests in about 20 percent of their 877 stops.  Mesa police arrested 78 drivers, more than any other agency.  Tempe arrested 33 drivers.  Scottsdale arrested 21 drivers.

June 2005: Suspect Faces Two Counts of Vehicular Homicide for Hit-and-Run Crash

Ryan Ernest Nevarez, a 24-year-old Scottsdale man, is suspected of causing a fiery hit-and-run crash.   Two victims were killed in the crash.  It is believed that Nevarez was driving a white four-door passenger car that reportedly rear-ended a two-door Datsun, which then struck a utility pole and caught fire.  Mr. Nevarez has turned himself in to police and is facing three felony charges.

Nevarez is alledged to have fled the scene of the crash, which occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Monday.  The incident took place near the intersection of 64th Street and Thomas Road.

Nevarez has not offered any explanation as to why he ran from the scene.  In 1998, Nevarez faced charges of underage consumption and disorderly conduct in Guadalupe Municipal Court. He was charged with extreme DUI and using watercraft after drinking in 1999 in Tucson.  He was also indicted on three felony counts of car theft in Maricopa County in 1999. A shoplifting charge against him was dismissed in 2000.

Arizona: DUI Warrant Program in Effect

For those charged with DUI in Arizona and who fail to appear for a hearing or jail, an arrest warrant is normally issued.  Under the Department of Public Safety’s new DUI Warrant Apprehension Program, which began May 20, 2005, DPS Officers are now the homes and places of employment of DUI offenders. The purpose of the new program is to reduce the number of DUI warrants in the state of Arizona and to hold those drivers arrested for DUI accountable for their actions. There are approximately 25,000 outstanding warrants for DUI in Arizona.
